Climb Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Moshi. Meet your mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing, equipment check, and introduction to your porter and cook team. Overnight at your Moshi hotel — rest and hydrate well.

Day 2

Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,100m)

Drive to Machame Gate and begin your ascent through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest belt — home to colobus monkeys, Hartlaub’s turacos, and giant tree ferns draped in mosses. As you climb higher, the forest gives way to the misty cloud zone. Arrive at Machame Camp. Dinner and overnight in tents.

Day 3

Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,840m)

Exit the forest into open moorland dominated by giant heather, everlasting flowers, and lobelia. Climb Shira Ridge with expanding views of Kibo’s glaciated summit ahead and the plains far below. Arrive at Shira Camp on the ancient Shira volcanic plateau. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)

The classic “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization day. Hike up to the dramatic Lava Tower volcanic plug (4,600m) for a lunch halt and maximum altitude exposure, then descend to Barranco Camp at the base of the towering Barranco Wall. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (4,200m)

Climb the exhilarating Barranco Wall — exposed rock scrambling with spectacular views of Kibo’s southern glaciers above. No technical gear required, but hands are needed for balance on the rock. Continue traversing the southern circuit through Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp. Dinner and overnight.

Day 6

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Ascend through the high-altitude alpine desert to Barafu base camp — perched between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers on Kilimanjaro’s southern face. Arrive by early afternoon. Rest, eat a good lunch, and sleep early. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7

Acclimatization Rest Day at Barafu

The defining advantage of the 9-day route — an extra rest day at Barafu that sets this itinerary apart from the 8-day option. Short acclimatization hike up the lower crater rim and back. This additional day dramatically improves summit success rates, reduces the risk of acute mountain sickness, and allows full recovery of tired leg muscles before the summit push. Dinner and overnight — summit push at midnight.

Day 8

Midnight Summit Push → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Begin the summit ascent at midnight, moving slowly and steadily up steep volcanic scree. Pass Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim as the first light of dawn illuminates the sky in brilliant oranges and purples above the clouds. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. Stand on the summit at sunrise, surrounded by ancient glaciers and an endless sea of clouds. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 9

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Final descent through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest to Mweka Gate. Certificate presentation — your official KINAPA record of summit achievement. Transfer to Moshi for a well-earned celebration dinner, marking the end of the 9-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb.
