Arrive in Moshi, Tanzania. Meet your certified mountain guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing covering kit check, route overview, altitude awareness, pacing strategy, and KINAPA mountain regulations. Rest, hydrate well, and overnight in a Moshi hotel ahead of the climb.
Early morning transfer to Rongai Gate on Kilimanjaro’s quiet northern slopes near the Kenyan border. Begin hiking through lush montane forest, crossing the Kenya border ridge as the vegetation transitions to open moorland. Arrive at Simba Camp with views back towards Kenya. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Continue ascending through moorland and giant heather zones. The landscape opens dramatically as the vegetation becomes sparse and Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped Kibo cone dominates the skyline ahead. Arrive at Second Cave Camp, named after a natural cave used by early explorers. Evening acclimatization walk, dinner, and overnight in tents.
A shorter hiking day to allow your body to acclimatize. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert zone. Kikelewa Camp sits in a sheltered valley below the dramatic jagged pinnacles of Mawenzi Peak (5,149m) — Kilimanjaro’s second-highest summit. Dinner and overnight in tents.
A steep and rewarding climb to the stunning Mawenzi Tarn — a glacial lake nestled beneath the soaring, jagged rock towers of Mawenzi Peak. This dramatic high-altitude camp is one of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular settings. The Rongai Route’s passage through Mawenzi Tarn is a key advantage, providing excellent acclimatization at altitude. Dinner and overnight.
A critical rest and acclimatization day that dramatically improves summit success rates. Short acclimatization hike along the crater rim ridges and around Mawenzi Tarn for views across the saddle to Kibo’s ice fields. Return to camp for a substantial dinner and early overnight — preparing body and mind for summit night.
Morning walk across the barren “Saddle” plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo to Kibo Hut. Rest during the afternoon. At midnight, begin the summit push — ascending steep volcanic scree and rock via Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, then traversing the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate at the summit sign in the shadow of the Southern Icefield. Descend via the Kibo Hut and continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
Final descent through moorland and montane forest to Marangu Gate. Receive your KINAPA summit certificate — a proud record of your achievement. Transfer back to Moshi for a celebration dinner, marking the end of the 8-Day Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climb.
