Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres, is climbable by hikers without prior mountaineering experience — the routes are non-technical, but the altitude makes acclimatisation the real challenge. We run the Machame route (the popular 'Whiskey Route', known for its scenery and the Barranco Wall scramble) over both 8 and 9-day itineraries, the latter adding an acclimatisation day at Barafu Camp for a notably higher summit success rate, plus the quieter Rongai route approaching from the northeast.
For a shorter, equally spectacular alternative within Uganda, the Rwenzori Mountains — the 'Mountains of the Moon' on the DRC border — offer glaciated peaks, afro-alpine moorland and far fewer climbers on the trail than Kilimanjaro.
Every climb includes licensed mountain guides, porters, park fees, camping or hut accommodation, and full board on the mountain — the logistics that make or break a summit attempt.
Longer itineraries with extra acclimatisation days have meaningfully higher success rates. Our 9-day Machame route adds a rest day at Barafu Camp (4,673m) specifically for this reason.
No technical climbing skills are required — the routes are graded hiking trails. Reasonable fitness and proper acclimatisation pacing matter far more than experience.
The Rwenzoris involve more technical terrain — mud, scrambling, via ferrata sections on some routes — over a shorter distance, while Kilimanjaro is longer but less technical. Both demand good fitness.
