Chimpanzee Tracking

About Chimpanzee Tracking

Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda is known as the primate capital of the world, home to around 1,500 chimpanzees alongside eleven other primate species. Chimpanzee tracking here means walking forest trails with a ranger guide, following calls and movement through the canopy until you find a community going about its day — feeding, grooming, and occasionally putting on a noisy territorial display.

Standard chimp tracking permits guarantee one hour with the chimpanzees once a group is located, usually within two to three hours of walking. For a deeper experience, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience permit allows up to four hours alongside researchers following a community that's still being acclimatised to human presence.

Most itineraries pair Kibale with a guided walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run reserve with excellent birding and a chance to see other primates like the red colobus and grey-cheeked mangabey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between chimp tracking and the Habituation Experience?

Standard tracking gives you one hour with a fully habituated community. The Habituation Experience permit allows up to four hours with a community still being acclimatised, alongside researchers — fewer visitors per day, more time observing natural behaviour.

Where is the best place to track chimpanzees in Uganda?

Kibale Forest National Park has Uganda's highest chimpanzee population and tracking success rate, and is the park Tulabagane Expeditions uses for all chimp tracking itineraries.

Can I combine chimp tracking with gorilla trekking?

Yes — Kibale is roughly a 2-hour drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park and can be combined with Bwindi gorilla trekking on a single circuit, as in our Rwanda–Uganda Ultimate Safari.
